2026 Maynard Golf League
Start of League Play
The start of the 2026 golf league is on Thursday, May 7
and based on registration the league will now have 14 two person teams. The
league structure for this year will consist of 14 weeks of regular league play.
The first 13 weeks will be head- to-head matches with
all teams playing every other team once. The final week will be a position week
based on league standings after the first 13 weeks. Final league results will
be based on the most points won after full season league play with cash prizes
awarded to the top teams.
Listed below are the assignment of teams and the weekly schedule of team
vs. team matches. A list of initial
alternates is below and will be available on our website for the start of the
season. Please remember that your
foursome must be ready to tee off at the beginning of your assigned time.
Please be prepared, any delays not only impact your foursome but every foursome
that follows you.
League Reminders:
Alcohol
on course – It is strictly prohibited to
bring alcoholic beverages on the course that has not been purchased on site (in
the club house). Infractions will be
subject to immediate removal from the course with the potential loss of future
playing privileges.
Pre-play
and post-play of matches – The pre-play and
post-play of weekly matches is strictly prohibited as stated in League Rule
4.4. If regular league play is cancelled
due to inclement weather the Golf Committee will coordinate and publish a
make-up date when all matches must be played.
League member conduct – The
Maynard Golf League was established to provide the opportunity for members to
engage in friendly golf competition and socialization. Any unruly, objectionable behavior by a
member toward other members, Stow Acres employees or other public golfers is
unacceptable and disciplinary action may result with the potential of expulsion
from the league for infractions.
League Highlights for 2026:
Men 18
handicap index maximum
Women 20
handicap index maximum
Any player with a
handicap greater than the maximum will play matches and tournaments based on
the maximum handicap limit.
Golf League Email and WEB Site:
This
year the golf committee will again use Email to provide up-to-date information
to the membership on weather postponements and reschedules, etc. Please
be sure to keep the league informed of Email address and telephone number
changes as soon as possible. Alternates should also notify us
immediately of any telephone number and email changes since that is the typical
way that members are able to contact you. All updates should be sent
directly to maynardgolfleague@yahoo.com.
For
the convenience of the membership the league will continue to maintain a
website for copies of league schedules and rules, the latest league standings
and any special notices of importance to league members and
alternates. The URL for the league website is http://mglweb.x10.mx/.

2026 Rules:
As
a reminder, changes to the official USGA Rules of Golf implemented in 2019
should make league play easier and more enjoyable. A summary of those changes is listed below. The Maynard Golf League rules package will be
available on the league's external website prior to the scheduled start of the
season on May 1. Please review the rules
prior to the start of league play.
SUMMARY OF USGA GOLF RULES IMPLEMENTED
IN 2019
Bunkers and Hazards:
Player will
be allowed to touch or move loose impediments in a bunker or hazard and will be
generally allowed to touch the sand or hazard with a hand or club with the
following restrictions which would be a penalty.
-
Deliberately touching the sand in a bunker or surface in a hazard
with a hand, club, rake or other object to test the condition of the sand to learn
information for the stroke.
-
Touch the sand in a bunker or surface in a hazard with a club in
making a practice swing, in grounding the club right in front of or behind the
ball, or in making the backswing for a stroke.
Putting Green Damage:
Player is
allowed to repair any damage on the green: "Damage on the green" will
be defined to include all types of damage (such as ball marks, shoe damage,
indentations from a club or flagstick, animal damage, etc.) except aeration
holes, natural surface imperfections or natural wear of the hole.
Taking Relief (ball drop):
Player will
continue to drop a ball when taking relief, but the dropping procedure will be
changed in several ways: How a ball may be dropped is simplified; the only
requirement will be that the ball be let go from the knee height so that it
falls through the air and does not touch any part of the player's body or
equipment before it hits the ground.
Ball Moved On The Putting Green:
Procedure
for when a ball on the putting green is moved by wind, water or other natural
forces, so that it must sometimes be replaced and sometimes be played from its
new spot:
-
If the ball had been lifted and replaced on its original spot
before it moved, the ball must always be replaced on its original spot,
regardless of what caused it to move.
-
The ball must be played from its new spot only if the ball had not
been lifted and replaced before it moved.
Damaged Clubs:
A player
will be allowed to keep using and/or to repair any club damaged during
the round, no matter what the damage and even if the player damaged it in
anger. A player will not be allowed to replace a damaged club, except
when it is damaged during the round by an outside influence or natural forces
or by someone other than the player or his or her caddie.
Flagstick In The
Hole:
There will
no longer be a penalty if a ball played from the putting green hits a flagstick
left in the hole. Players will not be required to putt with the flagstick in
the hole; rather, they will continue to have the choice to have it removed
(which includes having someone attend the flagstick and remove it after the
ball is played).
Unplayable Ball in Bunker:
The player
has an extra option allowing relief outside the bunker using the
back-on-the-line procedure, but for a total of two (2) penalty strokes.
Double Hits:
If a
player's club accidentally hits the ball more than once during a single stroke
there will be no penalty and the ball will be played as it lies.
Search Time for Lost Ball:
The
allocated time for searching a lost ball has been reduced to three (3) minutes
maximum.
MAYNARD GOLF LEAGUE – LOCAL RULES
Out of Bounds or Lost Ball:
As a time
saver a player will have the following options for Out of Bounds and Lost
Balls.
- If you hit a ball out of bounds you now have two choices:
o re-hit from the original spot - penalty is stroke and distance -
same as we used to do
o drop a ball at the edge of the fairway perpendicular to where you
went out of bounds - no nearer the hole –
add two stroke penalty
- If you have a lost ball in a non-penalty area, you may drop a ball
at the edge of the fairway no nearer the hole from where you think the ball was
lost – add two stroke penalty
Addition of League Alternates:
No new alternates may be added for
league play after Week 8 (July 9) of the schedule.
Slow Play:
Again
this year, Stow Acres management and the committee for the Maynard Golf League
want to make participation in this league a fun and enjoyable
experience. Our league has the first tee times for league play and
will be setting the pace of play for all other leagues that follow us. All
members should make every effort to eliminate slow play wherever
possible. Slow play not only affects your match but every foursome that
is following behind you. Stow and league management do not want to take
punitive actions, but will not hesitate do so if slow play becomes a repetitive
issue. The golf committee wants to remind all members of the actions that they
can take to speed up play and avoid issues.
1.
Be ready for your tee time - Your
assigned tee time is the time when you start teeing off. It is not the
time when you should start to wander over to the tee, determine who has the
honors or use delaying tactics because a player is missing. If a player
is missing you start without them, play the hole without them and let them begin
play on the next hole when they arrive. If your foursome delays on the first tee you
could receive a first warning before you ever hit the first shot.
Referring to League Rule 4.4:
If
a player arrives late or leaves early without playing a number of holes those
holes cannot be replayed after the hole is concluded. A hole is complete when a tee shot on the
next hole has been struck. A late player may not join play of a hole if any
second shots have been executed after the initial tee shots. The missing player
is not included in the match for the missed hole. For scoring purposes a score will be recorded
that will be par plus handicap or the lowest score that does not affect the
results of the match on that hole.
2. Pick up - If you
are having trouble in playing a hole, have already reached your maximum ESC
score for the hole and can no longer influence the results of the match on the
hole - PICK UP. Don't continue to slow down play for the whole foursome
and risk penalties for the whole group. Remember, it is in the rules that
you MUST PICK UP once you reach the green and are no longer competitive on the
hole.
3. Play READY
GOLF - Basically, this means forget "honors" while playing
your shots to reach the green. Everyone walk to their ball separately,
determine the club you will hit and if you are not in danger of hitting the
group in front or other players in your group – HIT away. Forget about
who is farthest away and proceed when you are ready. "Honors"
is most important on the tee and once you reach the green. None of us is
skilled enough where following honors while playing to the green will impact the
final results. The worst thing a group can do is
walk from ball to ball and watch each person play.
4. Don't delay on lost balls - If you
hit a ball into a location where you might lose it, quickly hit a
"provisional" as a backup and follow the rules regarding looking for a
lost ball. USGA rules stipulate a maximum of 3 minutes to look for a lost
ball.
5. Keep up
with the group in front of your group.
Don't gauge your speed of play by "Are we staying ahead of the
group behind us?" Each group should keep
up with the group ahead of them. The group behind
must wait for you to move before they hit so it will always appear like
you are staying ahead of them. Remember, the marshal will be measuring
your progress by the clock and space between you and the group in front.
If
in the unfortunate circumstance a group is told to pick-up and move to the next
tee because of slow play. The hole should be declared a "tie"
and each player should record par plus handicap as their score. A 2 1/4 hour 9 hole
round means an average of 15 minutes on each hole. That is more than sufficient
time to comfortably and enjoyable complete a hole. This does not have to
become a "Forced March" but we are all capable of playing quickly and
still having an enjoyable round. Be considerate of the groups that will
be playing behind you by playing as quickly as possible.
Finally,
the marshal's are out there doing a job and trying to make it enjoyable for
everyone regardless of what time he or she tees off. They do not deserve
an argument on the occasion when you are given a warning or a penalty.
Stow Acres does reserve the right to remove unruly individuals. Paying a
green fee does not give you unlimited rights to the course. You must
still follow the rules of the course, one of which is playing in a reasonable
period of time.
Scorecards:
This year
we will be using preprinted scorecards to record the results of weekly matches.
For the scorecard the minimum information that needs to be recorded is the
actual score of each player on each hole. The actual round total for each
player and the points won by each team can be included but will be checked
automatically by the scoring system. One person from each team should
attest the results by signing the card. Equitable Stroke Control (ESC)
information is no longer needed since it will automatically be calculated by
the scoring program. If there are any questions concerning the completion
of the scorecards refer to the rules package or ask a committee member.
REMEMBER: Any scoring errors on
cards are the responsibility of the participants and no scores will be modified after the card is signed and submitted.
A copy of the rules package and tee times will also be available in the
clubhouse for reference during league play. Any rules interpretations or
protests should be directed to a committee member for resolution.
Inclement
Weather:
When
inclement weather is at risk of cancelling league play for an evening, the
committee will make every attempt to work with the Stow Acres Pro Shop to
determine course status and notify members by email in advance. The
committee will then publish a makeup date when all matches for a cancelled
evening will be played. Since weather condition can be unpredictable it
is the responsibility of members to assume that play will continue if advance
notice is not given. If conditions change late in the day after a notice
can be reasonably sent and a committee member is on site, they will make a
determination of cancellation at the course. If a committee member is not
present, a determination to cancel play can be made by agreement of a majority
of league members for that evening. If a decision to cancel is made it is
binding for all matches of that evening and a reschedule date will be
established by the golf committee. See the rules package for additional
rules concerning inclement weather.
League Alternates:
A full list of alternates is available on the Maynard
Golf League website at http://mglweb.x10.mx/. New alternates may
